As a response to the growing use of Open Ai’s Chat GPT Google this week launched major changes to its search engine raising concern amongst online publishers, content creators and website owners who rely primarily on the search engine to draw traffic to their websites.
Soo, before we get a head of ourselves lets track back a little. How did all work before?
Well, traditionally there’s has always been a gentleman’s agreement between website owners and google. This symbiosis meant that websites received traffic, while Google benefited from organizing the information and monetizing it through ads and other tools. However, the introduction of Google’s “AI Overviews” has disrupted this balance.
What does Ai Overviews do exactly?
Google’s AI Overviews aims offer concise summaries of topics (derived from websites), saving users time by providing immediate information without requiring them to piece together details from multiple sources. Thereby eliminating the need for users to visit websites. This is known as the “zero click” effect where users obtain the information they were seeking without needing to click through to the source. This, of course, is a cause for concern for the numerous content creators and website publishers who rely on Google’s SEO for web traffic and revenue from advertisers.
So what now? How can website publishers maintain their web traffic from this drastic change?
Enhance Content Quality: Focus on creating high-quality, in-depth content that goes beyond what an AI summary can provide. Develop a Strong Brand Presence: Ensure that your brand is recognizable and trusted. Diversify Traffic Sources: Relying solely on Google for traffic is risky. Explore other channels such as social media, email marketing, and direct engagement with your audience to drive traffic to your website. Engage with Your Audience: Build a loyal audience by engaging directly with your readers through newsletters, social media, and community forums.
